This is how we measure our dresses--casual, day dresses, clubwear, and evening dresses.  Be sure to lay your dress flat.  Be exact.  Have a pen and paper next to you so you can write down the measurements as you go along.  Tip: Double the waist, hip, and hem!

*Tip: Do not hold your dress in front of you and stretch it as you measure.
